Every year Mayor Azure sets up four tables of chess around him. He sits in the middle and for a silver coin will beat every comer. Over the twenty years he has taken challengers, he has never lost.

Balneiros takes a seat at one of the tables, waiting for his prospective opponent to arrive. As a frequent consultant with Mayor Azure and his library, Balneiros offers the man a nod and a smile as he waits.

Mayor Azure looked at Baleniros and smiled, "Too afraid to sit down with my friend?" He raised a single taunting eyebrow.

Balneiros chuckled as the Mayor spoke, glancing around the room before leaning forwards as if telling a great secret, "I am afraid our first match would scare off all of the competition."

Azure laughed, "You needn't worry. It would not last long enough for any one to notice." He took a clean white handkerchief and began to polish his horns fastidiously.

Balneiros laughs as he stands, moving over to the Mayor's table and sitting across from him. "Should I consider that to be your surrender, then? You're truly too kind."

Azure finished buffing his horn so the black ivory shined. "I am afraid you misunderstood. I am about to defeat you swiftly." He pushed the game of chess forward. He was on the side of black so he motioned for Bal to go.
(Decide how you are going to attempt to beat Mayor Azure. Will you try to out strategize the Mayor using your intelligence? Do you prefer to use your wisdom to deduce his strategy and counter act? Or do you want to use your charisma to goad him into poor play?)

Balneiros will goad Mayor Azure into poor play while he attempts to establish a trap with his pieces, using moves made several turns prior to slowly force the Mayor into a series of bad decisions.
[CHA- 15, +2 mod, +4 save. INT- 13, +1 mod, +2 save.]

As Balneiros started insulting the Mayor's parentage, Azure barely seemed to notice. He just nodded after every insult as if it was a valid point. Then he saw Balneiros was using the Drake Win Gambit. The Mayor chuckled as he deployed the Hooken Shanks reversal. It was not a fast game, but the mayor took control early, and held on the entire time.
Balneiros had no choice but to knock down his own King in defeat.

Balneiros concedes his defeat, having already claimed victory by lasting longer than most would in the village. "You play a strong game as usual, Mayor. I'll need to borrow your books to beat you next time."

"There are several I wrote in my vault. When I die I will leave them to you, but until then I dare not let anyone exceed my skill in this game." The Mayor replied, "You fought well though." He lifted up the board and flipped it upside down. "This set will be your prize. Best game I have had in five years." He bowed his head.

Balneiros bows his head in return, grinning at the man. "Wise, keep your secrets until they can't be used against you. Perhaps next year I can finally best you."

Mayor Azure shook his head. "Even if you could you should think of your community. All of the voters would be greatly disheartened by their mayor's first defeat. They might want to select you as the new Mayor. And we both know you want none of that my lad." He started putting the chess pieces into the box formed by the upside down board.

"Aye, far too much I still wish to do. I should have thought of that before this game and had an excuse prepared," Balneiros states with a chuckle, looking about the room before helping the Mayor put the pieces away. "I hope I fare better in the other contests today."

"That is not in the spirit of the thing. These contests are about testing yourself, pushing yourself. The outcome doesn't matter. You have proven yourself in defeat." Azure finished putting the pieces away. He folded the board closed and snapped the latch to seal it. He lifted up the nicely carved wooden box and handed it to Bal. "This is yours now. Enjoy."
