Wynnter thought over his words for a long moment before replying to him. "You are probably more accurate than I would like." She took another bite and let the silence fill the room again. She was not a woman bothered by awkward moments like that. As she finished her bite, she placed the core on the table to be used to feed the pigs later. "How long has it been since you came to town?"

"I have been in town for three days- before that, my last visit to town was three weeks ago." Balneiros turned to face Wynnter again, studying her features like a foreign book. "I come when necessary."

Wynnter shook her head and frowned. "Stop being obtuse. I meant how long has it been since you came north for our homeland?" She spotted a small stain on the counter and reached across to grab a rag. She started rubbing at the mark trying to annihilate it from her table.

Balneiros' expression soured as he responded, turning to the Hand once more and inspecting it. "It has been almost a year since I arrived. The monster raids are a welcome time to experiment."

The red hand gave Balneiros a thumbs up. The color and arcane lighting were failing though as the spell only lasted a minute.
Wynnter nodded to herself, "That feels about right." She finished wiping the spot and walked the filthy rag over to the basket by the door she placed linens to be washed. She folded the rag carefully as she replied to her son, "Shorty after that your father sent me something to give to you. Do you wish a gift from him?" She turned back to her son and studied him. Her armor squeaked as she crossed her arms in front of her. That relationship had ended poorly and she did not speak of it often.

Balneiros frowned at Wynnter, thinking over her words in silence. "If Zelphar's sent me something, I'll at least look at it. At the very least, kindling is always useful." In truth, Balneiros' curiosity was peaked, and his opinion of his father was much less brutal than that of the rest of his family- as somebody who favored being alone, he could understand not wanting to settle down with a family.

Wynnter snorted, "I doubt it would make good kindling." She opened a door and there was long item wrapped in brown paper. "The letter your father sent advised that it would be unwise for me to touch it with my skin. I believe it is a staff." The staff was leaning against the wall of a closet. Wynnter walked away and turned to lean back against a table. She watched Balneiros again, with a face that only showed a slight interest.

Balneiros' curiosity becomes immediately apparent as the paper-wrapped item is revealed. He walks over to the closet, taking the staff and moving to the counter, laying it out as he looks down on it. Slowly, he unwraps the brown paper, careful to avoid potentially damaging whatever was inside.

The staff did not seem carved by a mortal hand. When Balneiros looked at it he knew this could only have been created using the arcane. Three different woods had been entwined through one another, but none of the three woods had been treated or polished. The white ash, myrtle and the bloodwood looked like driftwood grown into a single staff. The staff seemed to be slightly taller then Balneiros. On the staff's head there were three slots carved into it seemingly for gems or stones but they were empty.

Balneiros let out a quiet whistle as he studied the staff, and after a quick moment appeared to have an idea. Calling out to the mana around him, Balneiros attempts to cast his Detect Magic spell to find out if the staff bears any magic of it's own, and if so, what school it belonged to.
[Detect Magic, 1st level.]

Balneiros spoke the ancient words of magic and traced a circle in front of each eye with his finger. When the elf was finished two transparent lens of arcane power hovered before his eyes.
Balneiros looked at the staff and it throbbed with a deep magical power. It was not of any specific school. When he turned his head he almost had to shield his eyes. His mother's armor pulsed with magic, as well as an amulet she wore and a ring on her left hand. Wynnter said nothing though, just observed her sons work.

"Remarkable," was all Balneiros uttered as he dismissed the spell, though whether it was caused by the armor or staff was up for debate. He reached out to take the staff in his hand, at the same time calling to the magic inside of him to welcome the new bond. Assuming there is no explosion, he turns to Wynnter. "I've never noticed the power of your armor before. It could be worth a small nation."

The moment Balneiros' hand touched the staff he felt a kinship. He knew that this staff had been created with the same magic he had come to practice. It would take time to attune to the staff, but it was waiting for him with power.
Wynnter snorted, "Aye it has some small enchantments. If you had ever listened to a single story of mine then you would have heard of it's capabilities. Your sister knows them quite well I am sure." She raised her eyebrow and added, "I do not remember the entire letter your father sent, but he did say the staff was called Limbo's Key."

"I'd like to read it. A staff is unlike any other weapon, and far more deadly. He may have included something another wielder would like to know." Balneiros thought over the name briefly, Limbo's Key. The key to chaos, it could be interpreted as. He would have to think on it later.

"I do not know where I last placed it. I was not sure I was going to present this gift to you." Wynnter replied calmly. "I have seen magical staff before, and they are like any weapon, merely an extension of the wielder. If the wielder is weak so is the weapon." She never moved her gaze from her son's face as she spoke.
